Hacks to help prevent you from ripping your saree with a safety pin

On one trip to India, I found myself needing to wear a saree but without any safety pins! Luckily, it was also in India, so every little shop had them. Adding to that luck, I found these amazing safety pins with little gold beads on the end. If you have ever used a standard safety pin, you may have noticed that the tiny coil on the end can snag the fabric and damage it. They are also silver, which can sometimes conflict with the color of the saree. These pins were far superior to anything I’ve ever purchased in the U.S., but unfortunately I am yet to find anything quite like it available here. Instead, I have some hacks to help you achieve what this tiny yet mighty piece of metal can do.

  1. Use a bindi or bandage. Push the sharp end on the pin through the bindi before pushing in through the saree and pin it. This will help prevent the saree fabric from getting stuck in the loop.

  2. Use a hot glue gun. Make a glue ‘bead’ right above the loop on the sharp side of the pin. You can also use the glue gun to cover the entire loop.

  3. Thread a bead on the pin before pinning the saree. This is probably the trickiest because it can be harder to store a bead, although it almost completely replicates the amazing safety pins I mentioned.

If I do ever find out where to get those gold pins with the ball, I’ll post a link here.
